Who to Notify of Your Move, Part 2

Moving is a long, complicated process. Whether this is your first move or your fifth, it is always a lot of work to pack everything and plan ahead. That’s why Moving Kings wants to use our decades of experience in the moving industry to help make the process as stress-free as possible. Our fully trained team of professionals is here to help you from start to finish, from expertly packing unwieldy items, like a piano or large pieces of glass or marble, to transporting and storing your household goods if needed. The one job we can’t do is inform the people around you of your upcoming move. In part one of this series, we discussed the need to notify your family and your employer, landlord, and utilities company. Today we will continue our checklist of who you need to inform of your move.

Post Office

You can avoid a lot of problems and inconveniences by setting up mail forwarding. Even if you forget to inform friends or subscription services of your new address, the postal service will be able to redirect your mail for a period of time. You can fill out a change of address form onlineor at your local post office.

Your Bank

Your bank needs to know of your address change even if you are just moving down the block. It’s typically an easy process, so all you have to do is make a quick phone call or small edits online. If you are the forgetful type, this is a good time to transition to paperless communication. That way you get your account statements even if you haven’t notified the bank of your new address.

There are more decisions to make if you are moving out of state — do you plan to maintain your account long distance or close it before you leave? Do you need to transfer funds to a new bank? All those things take time, so it’s important that you call your bank sooner rather than later. They can walk you through the procedures of closing or making changes to your account. If you need to transfer funds, they will likely want you to make an in-person appointment to answer questions and fill out paperwork, so plan to take care of any transfers before you move.

Other Financial Institutions

Do you have multiple credit cards? You need to notify them all of your new address. Are you planning a cross-country move? It is especially important that you tell the credit card companies about your plans. You don’t want your card to be declined halfway through your trip because they flagged a gas station purchase in Nebraska.

If you have any outstanding loans, you also need to inform your lender that you are moving. It should be a simple process, similar to informing your bank. Many institutions will give you the option to change your address online.

Insurance Companies

All your insurance providers need to know that you’re moving. That includes health, car, and home or renter’s insurance providers. Your renter’s insurance company specifically could be a helpful phone call — ask if they will cover your possessions while they are being transported. Moving Kings is fully insured to protect your household goods, but that is not true of all moving companies.

Phone, Cable, and Internet Service Providers

In part one, we talked about ensuring your new house has the most important amenities ready to go when you arrive: running water and electricity. The next item on your list – especially if you have teenagers – is probably WiFi. Try to contact the providers in your new service area ahead of time and learn the procedures for setting up phone, cable, and internet lines. You also need to shut down services at your old address so you don’t keep paying for services you aren’t using. Cancel it a day or two before moving out if you want to minimize distractions.

You’re almost done! Informing the post office and any financial institutions you use of your move will clear up many potential issues, but there are still a few more organizations you need to notify before you can relax. Look for part three, the final installment of this series, for the full checklist of who you need to inform about your move.
