Family and Friends

Your family and friends should be the first to know if you plan to move, especially if you’re planning to move out of state. It will be a big change for all of you and you will want plenty of time to plan proper goodbyes. Even if you’re moving locally, give the people you care about a head’s up — they may even offer to help you move!

Your Employer

Whether you’re moving out of state or down the street, you need to let your employer know. You have to put in a two weeks’ notice if you are leaving your job, but try to inform them at least a month in advance if you can. They will appreciate the extra time to prepare for your departure and look for someone to take over your responsibilities. You may simply be moving down the street, but even if your job status won’t change, you still need to inform your workplace. Your address is on a lot of important paperwork, and it needs to be updated for taxes, insurance, and other purposes.

Your Landlord

If you’re renting your current home, you need to notify your landlord that you plan to move. Find your lease and reread it when you first think of relocating, because it will have important information about when and how you can end your current rental agreement. It should outline how much notice you need to give your landlord before you move out – 30 days, typically – and any other duties you need to perform before leaving.

This should be a formal, written notice to avoid any confusion. Clearly state your planned move-out date and any other pertinent details. You can also request the return of your security deposit, which the landlord is required to return within a certain amount of time after your lease ends. Check your local legislation to fully understand your rights and responsibilities as a tenant.

Utilities Company

This is important! If you like having electricity and running water, make sure you contact your utilities company before your move. You need to schedule a date for water, electricity, and other amenities to be turned on at your new address as well as choose a date to turn off the utilities at your old address. Aim to call the company at least a week in advance so you have time to learn the procedures and close out your old account if necessary. When scheduling the utilities shut-off for your old home, aim for the afternoon or night of your planned move-out date. You will still want working lights and plumbing when you’re transporting boxes and furniture to the moving truck! You also want to double check that everything will be turned on at your new house before you get there. If you are planning a cross-country move, you might want to schedule your shut-off date for a couple days after you plan to leave and the activation date with your new utilities company for a few days before you plan to arrive. You don’t want to be stuck in a house without power if something happens to delay your departure, and it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

We have covered a few of the most important people that you should inform of your move, but your family, employer, landlord, and your utilities company are not the only ones who need to be notified.
