Moving Large Pieces of Glass and Marble
If you have a large glass or marble piece in your home then you need to make special arrangements to move and transport your piece. In our over 20 years of moving we have unfortunately experienced instances where there has been damage to a very expensive glass or marble piece. If there is damage to the marble or glass, even the slightest chip or crack, in many cases means the piece cannot be repaired and you will be fighting the insurance claim for many months before settling. There are a few key fundamentals that you should keep in mind before you attempt to move glass or marble.
The most important rule when moving a large piece of glass or marble is to immediately turn the piece onto its side when you lift it up. If you try to move a glass or marble piece holding it straight on both ends, the weight of the glass or marble will literally crack the piece in half. To evenly distribute the weight, the piece needs to be turned directly up and on its side when you go to lift the piece up. It is always best to wrap the piece in moving blankets and mirror cartons prior to lifting the piece onto it’s side. Make sure that your dominant hand is supporting the bottom corner of the end you are carrying while your opposite hand is balancing, guiding and supporting the side of the table. Your support hand should be opposite to the side that your partner is supporting on the other end of the piece. Always put a blanket on the ground if you are setting the piece down and make sure there is a strong supportive wall or fixture to keep the piece standing upright with the weight distributed.
The next important technique, which basically should be a rule, is to always move a piece of glass or marble on an A-Frame Dolly. An A-Frame Dolly has 4 wheels and allows for glass or marble pieces to be transported on an incline to keep the piece vertical with the weight evenly distributed. The A-Frame Dolly also allows for the dolly to be strapped down to the truck and for the piece to be strapped to the actual A-Frame. It is essentially a smaller version of the trucks you may see on the road transporting someone’s granite kitchen island top. Moving Kings professionals can be sure that one of our A-Frame Dollys’ is on the truck for your move if you let your representative know ahead of time you have a large glass or marble piece as part of your inventory.
Unless you purchase “Additional Valuation Coverage” through a moving insurance broker, or unless you are covered under a “Relocation Clause” on your Homeowner’s/Renter’s Insurance, you may only be covered at the standard $0.60 per pound valuation coverage. This is very unfortunate if your piece is not handled properly and is damaged because a large glass or marble piece will cost upwards of $1000 to replace and your coverage may only cover you for up to or less than $150. It may be a good idea to purchase additional valuation when moving a large piece of glass or marble even if the piece is properly wrapped and transported. Sometimes even with the most careful moving techniques, glass and marble can be damaged because over time the integrity of glass and marble becomes compromised and makes the piece more brittle.
